New Hampshire's history begins with the settlement of the region by indigenous people during the Paleo-Indian period, which started around 12,000 BC. These indigenous peoples inhabited New Hampshire for thousands of years before European exploration and settlement. Archaeological excavations along the rivers have shown continuous habitation for more than 7,000 years.
The first permanent European settlement was made in 1623 at Hilton's Point (present-day Dover) by English fishermen. The land in the New World was granted to Captain John Mason, who named the new settlement after his homeland in Hampshire County, England. New Hampshire was one of the original thirteen states that made up the country and was the first settlement to establish both a constitution as well as an independent government that was separate from Great Britain in January of 1776.
