The history of Nebraska begins with the settlement of the region by indigenous people during the Paleo-Indian period, which started around 12,000 BC. These indigenous peoples inhabited Nebraska for thousands of years before European exploration and settlement. Archaeological excavations along the rivers have shown continuous habitation for more than 7,000 years.

The first permanent European settlement was made in 1735 at St. Mary's by French hunters and lead miners. In 1803, the area now known as Nebraska was sold to the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Nebraska achieved statehood following the Missouri Compromise in 1820.

Nebraska's economy ranks 35th in size among states and Washington, DC. In the 1st quarter of 2023, the real GDP growth rate for Nebraska was 7.5% per year, compared with 5.9% the previous quarter. The latest data shows that Nebraska economic growth is higher than the US overall. Gross domestic production (GDP) estimates the size of an area’s economy. It is the total value of all goods and services produced in an area. It includes the total dollar amount of consumption (products like cellphones and bread), government spending (on things like infrastructure and the military), business investment (a manufacturer building a new factory), and the net effect of trade (subtracting imports from exports). The Bureau of Economic Analysis calculates the GDP. Most economists are interested in the rate of growth. Growth in the inflation-adjusted GDP (or “real GDP”) tends to signal a positive economic outlook, while slowing growth may mean a recession is coming. Economic growth trends may differ as each state has a different mix of workers and industries. Economic growth by industry In the 3rd quarter of 2023, the real GDP growth rate for agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting in Nebraska was 65.2% per year, the highest in the state. The economic impact of industries is based on a concept of “value-added” to the goods or services created based on their work. The Bureau of Economic Analysis provides the relevant economic data.

In 2020, Nebraska had an estimated population of 1,961,504. Nebraska's population increased 12 out of the 12 years between year 2010 and year 2022. Its largest annual population increase was 1.6% between 2019 and 2020. Between 2010 and 2022, the state grew by an average of 0.6% per year.

As of 2022, 99% of Nebraska residents were citizens, and 2.23% of Nebraska residents were born outside of the country. The median age in Nebraska is approximately 36.2 years of age. The ratio of females to males is approximately 49.3% female and 50.7% male.

In terms of race and ethnicity, 88.7% of the population is White, 0.6% is Black or African American, 1.1% is Asian, 6.5% is American Indian and Alaska Native, 0.1% is Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 3.0% identifies as two or more races. The Hispanic or Latino population makes up 4.5% of the total population.

In conclusion, Nebraska's history, economy, population growth, and demographics are diverse and dynamic, reflecting the state's evolving role within the United States.
